What is Positive Behavior Support (PBS)?

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a comprehensive, research-based approach designed to improve the quality of life for individuals by promoting positive behavior change. It integrates principles from applied behavior analysis, humanistic psychology, and person-centered planning to create effective and individualized interventions.

Core Principles of PBS

  • Prevention: Focuses on preventing problem behaviors before they occur by modifying environments and teaching new skills.

  • Individualization: Tailors interventions to the unique needs of each individual.

  • Function-Based Approach: Understands and addresses the reasons behind challenging behaviors.

  • Multi-Tiered System of Support: Implements interventions at multiple levels to support individuals, from universal strategies to intensive, individualized plans.

  • Data-Driven: Utilizes data to inform decision-making and measure the effectiveness of interventions.

  • Collaboration: Involves teamwork among educators, caregivers, and professionals to ensure consistent and comprehensive support.

  • Respect and Dignity: Emphasizes respect for individuals and aims to enhance their dignity and quality of life.

How PBS Works

PBS involves several key steps to ensure effective implementation and positive outcomes:

  1. Assessment: Conducting thorough assessments to understand the individual's strengths, needs, and the function of their behavior.

  2. Planning: Developing personalized behavior support plans that include proactive strategies, teaching of new skills, and reactive strategies.

  3. Implementation: Putting the support plan into action across different settings (home, school, community) with consistency.

  4. Monitoring: Regularly collecting and analyzing data to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to the plan.

  5. Evaluation: Assessing the overall effectiveness of the intervention in improving the individual's behavior and quality of life.
